A ranula is a fluid-filled cyst that develops beneath the tongue in the mouth. It is stuffed with saliva (spit) that a damaged salivary gland has let out. One of these glands is injured, causing the saliva to leak into the tissues nearby the gland and create a bubble instead of draining directly into the mouth. A ranula can occasionally develop for unknown reasons. A mouth injury from an oral procedure, a facial blow, or biting the lower lip might also cause one to begin. Two varieties of ranulas exist. When the cyst remains in the floor of the mouth, next to the tongue, it is referred to as an oral or simple ranula. A plunging (or diving) ranula develops when the cyst descends down the neck and under the mouth. It can happen with a basic ranula but is less common than a simple ranula. One of the most prevalent diseases of the salivary glands is ranulas. The sublingual glands, which are located beneath the tongue and empty onto the mouth's floor, are where ranulas most frequently develop.
