A cochlear implant is a hearing-improving technological device. It may be a viable alternative for patients who have significant hearing loss due to inner-ear damage and are unable to hear effectively with hearing aids. Unlike hearing aids, which enhance sound, a cochlear implant delivers sound impulses to the hearing (auditory) nerve by bypassing damaged sections of the ear. A sound processor that fits behind the ear is used in cochlear implants. The processor receives sound impulses and delivers them to a receiver placed behind the ear under the skin. The signals are sent by the receiver to electrodes placed in the snail-shaped inner ear (cochlea). The signals excite the auditory nerve, which sends the information to the brain. The brain perceives the signals as sounds, however, they will not be identical to genuine hearing. Learning to decipher the signals received from a cochlear implant takes time and practice. Most cochlear implant users notice significant improvements in speech understanding after 3 to 6 months of use.
