The hyoid bone, a tiny bone situated between the voice box and the tongue, carries tissue known as a thyroglossal duct along its route. The majority of thyroglossal cysts are benign (non-cancerous), but in a small percentage of cases (1–2%), a cyst may be cancerous. The chance of the cyst returning is decreased by employing a sistrunk technique to remove the thyroglossal cyst, bone, and duct. Total thyroidectomy refers to the removal of the entire thyroid gland when the surgeon determines that a cyst is malignant. The thyroid gland must be removed in order to employ radioactive iodine, a popular treatment for thyroid cancer. It must be decided whether a second procedure to remove the thyroid gland is necessary because typically the malignancy is only discovered after the cyst is removed. A neck dissection to remove your neck's lymph nodes may also be performed if the malignancy has spread to your lymph nodes.
