Ranula excision

Category Surgical

A ranula is a fluid collection or cyst that forms in the mouth under the tongue. It is filled with saliva (spit) that has leaked out of a damaged salivary gland. The ranula is bluntly dissected off the underlying mylohyoid muscle. Depending on the size of the cyst, the cyst can be excised completely along with the sublingual gland, or its contents can be evacuated in cases of large ranulas in which excision can risk injury to adjacent structures.
