Examination in acute vertigo must include the Hallpike maneuver and head thrust test. In acute vertigo always consider 'ABC': acute vestibular neuritis, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and cerebellar stroke. Vertigo is a sensation of motion or spinning that is often described as dizziness. Vertigo is not the same as being lightheaded. People with vertigo feel as though they are actually spinning or moving, or that the world is spinning around them. An otolaryngologist performs a physical exam to look for signs and symptoms of the cause of vertigo. He or she uses delicate instruments to magnify and examine the ear canal and eardrum. Your doctor may also examine your eye movements or ask you to track an object from one point in space to another.
